End of Petersburg Siege map, April 2, 1865
In a surprise morning attack, Grant breaks through Lee's defenses and finally ends the nine month siege of Petersburg. The rebels slow the Union onslaught long enough for the rest of the Confederate army to evacuate west from Petersburg and Richmond.
